How to Keep Your Children's Teeth Healthy

Even young children can learn lifelong habits to keep their teeth healthy! Here’s what you can teach them:

  • Brush twice a day (at least). At a minimum brush after breakfast and before bedtime. Even better: Brush after lunch and snacks, too! Brushing properly breaks down plaque.

  • Brush every tooth. Kids should spend some time on the teeth along the sides and in the back of the mouth.

  • Spend at least two to three minutes brushing. To help them keep track of time, use a timer or play their favorite song to help pass the time.

  • Use a toothbrush with soft bristles. Everyone should get a new toothbrush every three months.

  • Floss, because brushing isn’t the only thing that keeps the mouth healthy. Slide the dental floss between each tooth and up along the gum line. Floss gets rid of food that's hidden where the toothbrush can't get it.

It's also important to visit the dentist twice a year or as often as your children’s dentist recommends. Besides checking for cavities or signs of gum disease, the dentist will clean your children’s teeth, and can demonstrate the best way brush and floss.
